Sponsors/Accountability
A Full of Faith sponsor is a Christian in recovery who understands food addiction from personal experience and is willing to share with individuals (or as the lead of a small group) in a teaching, guiding, helping and encouraging role. He or she is sponsored, has more than 30 days of freedom from compulsively overeating, and is actively engaged in working the tools of recovery as a way of life in the Full of Faith program.
In Full of Faith, we believe that God and abstinence (as described in this program) are the most important things, without exception. These two things unify us and make us members of the Full of Faith family.
As members, all sponsors and sponsees agree on a basic food plan--weighed and measured, with detailed options for exceptional circumstances (ie: restaurant dining, when sick, medical issues, when a food change needs to be made). And all sponsors and sponsees agree on a form of communication. Some talk everyday on the phone at a set time, some e-mail, text or send private messages each day. Committing to a specific food plan each day is paramount.
A sponsor's responsibility is to share their experience, strength and hope in a kind and loving, non-judgemental, faith-filled way. A sponsee's responsibility is to write a specific food plan and commit it to the sponsor every day. If there are other agreements in place, the sponsee is held accountable. Sponsees agree to be 100% honest 100% of the time. No exceptions. We don't hold any food secrets from our sponsors no matter how insignificant the indiscretion might seem.
Beyond abstinence and accountability, a sponsor teaches a sponsee how to use the tools of recovery to support this life-changing way of life. There are many ways to do that--some sponsors introduce the rest of the tools in a more casual approach, while others set-up a disciplined outline for using every tool every day. As a general rule, though, sponsors want to be sure that their sponsees are praying, reading the Word, communicating with other food addicts, going to meetings, working the 12-steps, writing their feelings if they are hurting for some reason, giving back (pretty much all the tools) regularly. These things are action steps of a program that works. This is not a diet club, but a way of life.
In the Full of Faith program, we also offer help and encouragement through the Full of Faith Accountability Facebook Group. There is a daily post entitled "In Need of a Sponsor Group" (with a picture of a plate with a big smile in the center) for people who are new to the group or for those who are coming back and want accountability. There is an assigned leader that oversees the group each day, making suggestions and guiding these people to help and encourage them, and to assure them that they are not alone. This is a place of transition. In time, these individuals find sponsors or join small groups.
Let's pray that every man and woman who struggles with food issues finds the peace that God has waiting for them on the other side of surrender. There is help and healing in the Full of Faith family.
